#36 The Domestic Issue
At a time when breastfeeding rates are dismally low, and miseducation and judgment about breastfeeding
abound, it can be difficult to find picture books that reflect the reality of breastfed children and their families.
Written in simple verse and illustrated by photographs of babies and toddlers nursing. Near Mama’s Heart
helps bridge the gap.
The diversity of the photographs is refreshing: The women range in ages and sizes, the children vary in ages,
with tandem nursers represented, and, though the families are predominately white, some families of color do
make appearances, as does at least one interracial family. There are no same-sex couple pictured.
My toddler loves to look at all the babies breastfeeding, and I like to think she is internalizing the pro-
breastfeeding rhetoric. She actively seeks this book out to ‘read’ to her toys, and gets excited whenever she
sees it.
