Near Mama’s Heart…and Breast
Parenting Expert Releases Children’s Book about Breastfeeding as
Breastfeeding Rates in the United States Continue to Climb

Westminster, MD, April 4, 2006 – Breastfeeding is back in style in America.  According to statistics reported by
The United States Centers for Disease Control, more American moms are breastfeeding and they are nursing
longer.  These mother-child dyads and their family members can celebrate all the benefits of nursing, including
the nutritional, immunological, developmental, and emotional benefits, with a soon-to-be released children’s
book about breastfeeding.  Written by parent coach and educator Colleen Newman, a Certified Happiest Baby
Educator, Near Mama’s Heart, is a love poem dedicated to Newman’s own children, accompanied by over thirty
pictures of women and their nurslings bonding through breastfeeding in every conceivable pose, engaged in a
wide variety of activities.

“When I was expecting my second child, I searched for a book about breastfeeding that I could share with my
two-year-old son,” Newman explains.  “There weren’t many that captured the beauty of the parent-child bond
nurtured through breastfeeding in a way that an older sibling could understand.  So I wrote Near Mama’s Heart
as a keepsake that describes the experience of being breastfed from a child’s perspective for my children and
for others like them.”  Near Mama’s Heart contains heartwarming verse by Newman accompanied by exceptional
photography.  The photos from Near Mama’s Heart were chosen from over five hundred submissions from
around the world.  The selected photos come from the United States, Canada, Germany, Denmark, and
Singapore.  Most of the pictures are of moms and their solitary nurslings, although there are a few of tandem
nursing as well as poses with dad.

Near Mama’s Heart comes at a time of considerable advances in the scientific knowledge of the benefits of
breastfeeding.   The 2005 Policy Statement on Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk of the American
Academy of Pediatrics acknowledges this new body of research and recommends exclusive breastfeeding (no
bottle supplementation) of infants until six months of age and its continuation “for at least the first year of life and
beyond for as long as mutually desired by mother and child.”
